INCREDIBLE !
The Collection of Minerals of the university Pierre et Marie Curie (Jussieu) Paris VI is threatened to be left aside ; they will remain in boxes for a very long time.
React with us !
All of you have heard of the magnificent collection (ex Sorbonne), one of the most beautiful in the world, founded and displayed by Pierre BARIAND and kept by Jean-Claude BOULLIARD. You all could appreciate the wonderful work of exhibition and the worthy value of the shown minerals.
We were informed that, because the campus of the university of Jussieu is going to be renovated, the collection of minerals will be replaced by a specialised library.
In fact, the " burial " of these minerals is planned for next autumn ; after being stocked for two or three years in premises that won't be used, the best specimens would be exhibited in a temporary place for three or four years, before being installed for good in a museum, the place of which is only known today : under a staircase !
Have we considered the risks following this type of operation ?
The three removals are going inevitably to bring about serious damages : break, theft, spoil, difficulty in packing and stocking all the more so as many preceding removals turned out to be dramas.
On the other hand, a very efficient team who has being working for many years in the management of the collection and the welcome of the public, is going to disappear.
What will become of these people in six years' time ?
WE agree to the project of the museum worthy of this name in order to great the collection of minerals in the best possible conditions for the objects as well as the public.
WE agree to the temporary closing (in periods when the public is scanty) to ensure the withdrawing of the asbestos in the entrance.
BUT WE disagree with the irresponsible decision to bury one of the best pieces of French geological treasure for such a long time and without any hope this collection can be shown in the future.
ALL of you, who are fond of minerals, legislators, professionals, curators, collectors, tradesmen, amateurs, the public; you have to react.
So as to alter this project in a more favourable way to preserve the collection, let's keep the treasure in the same place until the definitive removal in a real museum. For that purpose a supporting committee created by GEOPOLIS was founded on the 27 march 2004.
If you are ready to support our action, thank you to fill in the enclosed form to that we may inform you about the evolution of the situation.
This collection will be exceptionally and freely opened to the public on the first and the third Saturday of each month from 1pm till 6pm as soon as Saturday, April the third and until the closing day on the nineteenth of July. Take advantage of this opportunity to discover or rediscover this wonderful treasure.
TOGETHER, and thanks to your help, we are committed to maintain the opening of the collection to the public until a new project was born.
