General Information
During the last ten years, Mineralogy & Museum meetings have provided the opportunity for any person with an interest in mineralogy collections, in particular museum staff members, to stay abreast of the latest developments of modern methods in the areas of communication, exhibitions, computerization of collections, history of mineralogy. The first meeting took place in London in 1988, and was followed by Toronto in 1992, Budapest in 1996 and Melbourne in 2000. The next one is due in 2004 and should be used to assess in which areas progress has been made during this period. This M&M5 meeting should help in foreseeing the main axes of development, which will shape museums and mineralogy collections in time to come.
Paris is a large city with a long-standing tradition in conference organization. Moreover, it is also the cradle of scientific Mineralogy, which started at the end of the XVIIIth Century. It houses three large collections, going back to the time of Romé de L’Isle and Haüy. These collections are respectively located in the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), the National Museum of Natural History and the Ecole Nationale des Mines de Paris. With the support of the Société Française de Minéralogie et Cristallographie (SFMC) and the Office de Coopération et d'Information Muséographique (OCIM), these three institutes offer to host together the next M&M5 Meeting in Paris.
Preliminary Topics
The program will embrace the four main aspects of Museum work, namely research, collections management, history and public program/exhibitions. Each session will start with keynote speeches by invited speakers and will end with a round table summarizing and discussing the major aspects presented during the day. In order to allow sufficient time for discussion, the number of oral presentations will be limited. A poster session running in parallel will be used for all other contributions.
